The Documentaries of Steven M. Manin
I sold my business in 1995 and found myself in a position to do whatever I wanted. The choice was between writing and filmmaking.
Curiously, I chose
the latter.
I started a company called
Legacy Productions whose mission was to create high-end biographical
documentaries for “the rich but not so famous.” Soon after starting Legacy, I left my girlfriend and found myself back in the
dating scene. One night I met a woman from Saskatchewan, Canada in a lower Manhattan bar. We stayed in touch and, that
Christmas, she traveled to NYC
to visit me. I filmed the 12 day debacle, cut it down to a 2 hour rough, and sent
it to HBO.
THEY BOUGHT IT! The resultant 72 minute film, “Men are From Manhattan…Women are From Saskatchewan,” a seminal “reality”
show, premiered on HBO on Valentine’s Day, 1998.
Flush with optimism and enthusiasm from the success of my first film, I made
what is, arguably, my best film. “Chosen Again” chronicles what happened
when I took the Southern Baptist Convention up on its
offer to convert Jews lest they spend eternity in the fires of hell. "Chosen Again" is at once funny, scary, educational and
controversial. Indeed, it is its controversial theme (though it was conceived as a comedy) that prevented the film from getting
picked up for distribution. It remains, however, a timeless film that is as relevant today as it was when it was shot in 1999.
It has only been seen by a limited number of people and now, in 2008, it is offered to the public for the first time.
